CHAPTER THIRTEEN

You are only twenty! Papa yelled. You shouldn't even have those urges!

Ka'lei rubbed her forehead. Having that man scream inside her head was giving her a headache. It had been hell trying to get clean after that little incident. Her skin wanted to crawl off her body because now she felt dirtier than she had been with the blood and bat shit.

Papa, I've grown to where I'm almost physically as old as Velithor. I have those urges. Get over it.

He grumbled, but remained silent. It seemed that was the only come-back that would get him to shut up. She'd have to remember that a little faster next time.

"Ka'lei?" Morough poked his head through the crack in the door. "Are you all right?"

She was sure her eyes were bloodshot. Her head throbbed, and her belly ached with hunger. "I'm fine." She smiled at him and stretched out where she'd been curled up on the bed.

"Has he gone quiet yet?" She nodded. "Good."

I have not gone quiet, Iliastaire murmured. I'm plotting.

"Oh god..." Ka'lei sat up on the bed and fisted her hands in her airy skirt. Plotting what, exactly?

Morough looked at her strangely, but leaned against the doorway. He had come to know when she was having internal conversations with his father, and this time he seemed interested.

Well... that makes sense. Sorta. What's an era?

Our passage of time. We do not measure in seconds, minutes and hours. They are too fleeting and hold little meaning to us. Days, for us, are revolutions. Our weeks comprise fourteen days, which we call a span. We do not have months, but count the seasons, which equal to between six and seven spans each. A year, for us, is a cycle which is why a woman's bleeding is called her cycle, as it happens yearly. A decade is an age, for us, and a century, an epoch. An era, is ten epochs, or a millennium. An eon, is ten eras, or ten millennia. And last, there is the decaeon.

Which is ten eons, she finished for him.

Correct. Remember these, as not all elves will assume your human standards of the passage of time.

Okay... Right. So, how do you know when meal times are if you have no clocks? she asked.

You will learn to listen to your instincts as you grow, my darling. Your instincts will become greater and more accurate than any clock you have ever used in the human world.

Neat. She sighed and rubbed her temples. Strong but gentle hands pulled hers away by the wrists and took over for her. Smiling, she leaned back against Morough's broad chest. So what are you plotting,
